Virtual Vehicle

Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH will contribute to the definition of criteria for homologation and certification of perception systems (in relation to sensors and data fusion) for SAE level 3,4,5 systems with special focus on requirements for mixed criticality automated driving architectures (safety-, security- and privacy-critical architectures covering sense-plan-act)

Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH is the Europe’s largest R&D center and innovation catalyst for virtualized vehicle technology. Its research focus is the linking of numerical simulations and hardware testing, leading to the future-proof whole system design solutions and novel validation procedures.

The Virtual Vehicle Research GmbH is Europe’s largest R&D center for virtual vehicle technology located in Graz, Austria. It was founded in 2002 as a start-up and now have grown into a medium sized company with about 300 employees. Its research priority is the linking of numerical simulations and hardware testing, which leads to a powerful HW-SW whole system design and development and automation of novel testing and validation procedures. This focus on industry-related research makes VIRTUAL VEHICLE the innovation catalyst for future vehicle technologies. The international partner network of VIRTUAL VEHICLE consists of 30 national and 50 international industrial partners (OEMs, Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers, and software providers) as well as 18 national and 30 international scientific institutions spreading over more than 20 countries. It takes part in 38 ongoing EU projects, out of which in 6 of these multi-national projects it acts as coordinator.

Virtual Vehicle (VIF) will contribute to the ECA Architect 2030 project by identifying available and missing test procedures through the specification of relevant use cases and homologation strategies for certification of the perception system for SAE 3+ vehicles. VIF will further contribute to the definition of safety levels for automated driving and investigate HW & SW concepts tailored for perception systems for automated driving. In doing so, VIF will specify a modular simulation environment covering relevant components of automated driving systems. Finally, VIF will contribute to methods for validation of the perception systems and sensor fusion technologies by providing its automated vehicle demonstrator for integration of the developed perception monitoring systems and solutions.

  • VIF will specify a modular simulation environment covering relevant components of automated driving system
  • VIF will contribute to requirements for environmental awareness and will work on validation concepts for sensor fusion in simulation models, considering a multi-layer architecture for sensor fusion
  • VIF will analyze real measurement data from radar, lidar and camera with focus on situations in which the perception sensors do not work as expected
  • VIF will investigate the perception limits of radar, lidar and camera with respect to weather issues, day/night, etc. and develop corresponding sensor models (black/grey/white box modelling)
  • VIF will generate the relevant data with its automated vehicle demonstrator
  • VIF will participate in dissemination and standardization activities
