TracSense will provide the means and knowledge to obtain and interpret information on road surface conditions


TracSense AS is a Norwegian start-up that is developing a novel car-mounted optical sensor that can estimate road weather conditions with high precision and reliability.

 

TracSense AS is a Norwegian start-up that is developing sensor technology which makes autonomous driving more robust in winter conditions. The driver assistance systems (ADAS) that are found on cars today are unaware of the occurring road surface conditions, leading to potential dangerous situations. This is particularly true for harsh climates, such as found in Northern Europe. Therefore to further improve the safety of these systems it is important for the car to detect slippery roads. TracSense is solving this problem by developing a car-mounted optical sensor that can perform this evaluation with high precision and reliability. Uncertainty quantification and residual risk calculation for Lidar/camera and fusion unit. TracSense’s role in the project is primarily within the quantification of uncertainty and residual risk calculation. As road surface conditions (RSC) monitoring systems today are not part of automotive sensor suits, the company will provide the technology and methods to assess and mitigate the effects of varying surface conditions. Methods shall be explored and developed to integrate the physical sensor system units with digital performance models and environmental data sets.

TracSense will provide the means and knowledge to obtain and interpret information on road surface conditions. This is a unique ability that contributes to the overall system performance. Further down the supply chain the provided data will be interpreted in order to reduce uncertainty, by combining the information with other sensor readings through advanced sensor fusion methods. There are a large number of residual risks involved with current self-driving technology. Quantifying the risk of pending road surface conditions is a piece of a large and complex puzzle.

Acknowledgement

ArchitectECA2030 has been accepted for funding within (ECSEL JU) in collaboration with the European Union’s H2020 Framework Programs under grant agreement No 877539.

The project will receive an ECSEL JU funding up to 4 M€ completed with national budgets from national funding authorities in Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Austria and Norway.
